United Airlines (UAL) is a major American airline company. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Continental Holdings, Inc. and has its corporate headquarters at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. It has secondary hubs at Washington Dulles International Airport, Denver International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and also at Narita International Airport near Tokyo in Japan.

UAL is perhaps the oldest commercial airline in the world. The company regards May 17, 1926 as its foundation day as well as the day when airline service in the United States began operating on fixed routes and on fixed schedules.

The airplane pioneer William Boeing started his own airline by the name of Boeing Air Transport in 1927. He started buying airmail terminals to expand his business. Within a span of four years, Boeing’s holdings multiplied tremendously and included airlines, airplane and parts manufacturing companies, and even several airports.

In 1927, Pratt & Whitney was merged into Boeing to form United Aircrafts and Transport Corporation (UATC). The following year, Boeing Air Transport, National Air Transport, Varney Airlines and Pacific Air Transport joined together to form United Airlines with the objective of providing pan American passenger and mail services. United Airlines Inc. was formed by UATC on March 28, 1931 to take care of its airline subsidiary.

UAL is one of the largest airlines in the world with a workforce of 48,000 dedicated employees. The fleet of the company consists of 359 aircrafts presently with an average fleet age of 13.5 years as of January 11, 2010. The airline flies to 73 domestic destinations across United States of America and 41 international destinations worldwide.

Passengers belonging to as many as 25 countries are catered to by the airline including countries in Asia, Americas, Europe, Oceania and Africa. UAL is one of the very few airlines which cover all the six continents inhabited by human beings. UAL is also the founding member of the Star Alliance, which is the largest airlines alliance in the world

The airline’s domestic route network in USA is concentrated to the Midwest and western parts of the country. It is also a leader when it comes to providing transcontinental, transpacific, and transatlantic services. American people prefer it as the official US carrier to Hawaii and the largest carrier to Asia and Australia. Presently, UAL is concentrating on expanding its international presence, particularly in China, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
