The choice between push or pull strategy has been the egg or hen debate of the marketing world. The preferences have been divided to say the least. To make the matters even more complex, online marketing has added a new dimension to the marketing mix.
Times have really evolved since days when people struggled to understand the difference between sales and marketing. The need & importance of marketing is well understood. In fact, people have realized the relevance of marketing to the point of confusion of how much is too much? Well, if marketing is important, marketing right way is critical. Push strategy advocates
pushing the products / services of a company to the customers. It aims to sell by taking the company to the audiences. While, Pull strategy recommends pulling the customers towards the company. It works on situation where the customers wants the company’s product and goes towards it. Both are equally proven outlooks, there is no right or wrong. It’s about choosing the right mix. If you look at it broadly, offline (or on-ground) marketing tools like print, radio, TVCs,sales team etc. are basically push oriented. They can be used to ‘pull’ but they are designed for ‘push’. Online, on the other hand, is a pull centric medium. Hard selling generally doesn’t work online. Putting, two & two together, it’s most logical to go ‘push’heavy offline and ‘pull’ focused online. The combination should work well in tandem.
Again, this is a much generalized principle; your mix depends on the kind of products, targets, competition etc. It’s more of a guideline, a first step for you to build your marketing strategy on. At the end of the day, pull or push, the real value lies in the numbers.
