In This Microwave World

We live in a microwave world; a world where you can get instant anything.  From drive through dinners to fast acting cold medicines, microwaveable popcorn, drive-thru banking and even drive through pharmacies and liquor stores, there isn’t anything you can’t have and have now with one exception; personal success.

Achieving personal success is not an instantaneous process. Any successful person will be able to tell you that it takes time, effort, energy and attention to detail to create a plan for personal success and then to follow that plan through to its conclusion.

It is one of the downfalls of our society that we have all the tools and technology necessary to create a world where we can achieve goals faster, more effectively and more efficiently than ever before and yet that it is these very tools that have created a society that can’t seem to wait five minutes for a hamburger, let alone lay the groundwork for a long term plan for personal success and then take the steps necessary to achieve it.

If you wish to attain personal success you need to wean yourself off of the “get instant results” mentality that has crept like a plague through our culture.  You have to understand and accept the fact that the results you are looking for are not going to happen overnight; that there are certain steps you are going to have to take (and in a certain order) in order for your dream to become a reality.  Accepting this will probably go against everything you feel to be ‘logical’ or ‘rational.’  Nevertheless, cultivating patience is a must if you are going to see your plan through to conclusion.

One thing that can help as you break down your plan into manageable steps is to give yourself rewards for each step that you accomplish, for those who have been immersed in the “microwave” society this can be a way to wean yourself off of the need for instant results.  A reward of some sort helps to keep you focused not on the goal itself (which may seem unobtainable, especially at first) and help you to focus instead on the next step in the process that will help you to reach that goal.

Another technique is to talk as if the goal has already been accomplished.  Tell yourself that it was really far simpler than you thought it would be.  Talk about your future goal in the past tense, as if it is already a part of your reality; talk about the mindset you had to cultivate in order to get to that point.  Before you know it, you’ll be thinking exactly that way yourself.

And finally, accept the fact that there are going to be setbacks and delays.  Real life does not always work as smoothly – or as quickly – as the way we think things “should.”  No matter how big the delay or the setback, you can’t let it discourage you.  You will achieve your goals; you just have to believe that it is possible and understand that success is not going to be instantaneous.
