Deep in the mountains southwest of Xian is a mysterious site known by few people outside of China. It holds the pyramids of China. Little is known about who built these structures. It is a mystery which has baffled and intrigued the locals for centuries. Dozens of amazing mounds rise from a relatively flat landscape. Locals refer to the largest of the pyramids as the Maoling Mausoleum. It is said to be the burial place of Emperor Liu Che. It is 150 feet tall and took 53 years to build. It was constructed between 157 and 87 BC. There are numerous other pyramids surrounding it. The pyramid complex is partially obscured by young trees. Legend says the stunningly beautiful Qin Ling Mountains nearby hold more pyramids.
Another fascinating Chinese site lies mere miles from the pyramid complex in Xian. It is a location where thousands of lifelike carvings of Chinese warriors have been found. Called the Terra Cotta Army, they were discovered in Lintong District in 1974 by local farmers. The statues are part of the memorial for the first Chinese emperor. Constructed in the 3rd century BC, the statues are in an area near the mausoleum of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang. The statues are of soldiers, craftsmen, animals, officials, acrobats, chariots and others. It is truly an amazing sight.
The Xinjiang on China's northwest border is one of the most spectacular places in the country. There are the Tarim and Dzungarian Basins and the frigid snow-covered mountains called Altai, Kunlun and Tianshan. The Tianshan Mountains divides the region. To the south of the mountain range lies the Gobi and Takla Mahan Desert. The area to the north features the Kanas Nature Reserve and the Nalati grasslands. About 4% of the region is habitable. But many people go there to see the spectacular scenery including the scarlet coloured Flaming Mountains with its 8 valleys and the Yadan Spectacle, a large area with uniquely shaped, salt covered earthen mounds which shimmer in the sunlight.
