The Importance of Sleep&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt; by Simon Evans&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt; Busy Kids&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In today's society the temptation is to keep our kids busy all the time. My wife and I have been guilty of that ourselves. But it is so important to build downtime into both ours and our children's schedules. It is necessary for healthy development of the body and the mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ultimate form of downtime is sleep. We obviously need to ensure our kids get enough sleep. We all need to sleep. As much as I would like to have more hours in the day, robbing them from my sleep time never seems to work. There are physiological reasons for this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some people need less sleep than others and you need different amounts of sleep at different points in your life. For kids, sleep is incredibly important for their mental and physical development.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Recharge the batteries&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sleep is literally a time for the brain to recharge. Just like a rechargeable battery is ‘filled up' again by putting it on the charger, so does sleep recharge our brains. Activity during the day actually uses up brain molecules required for signaling and processing thoughts. These molecules are remade during sleep to fill the reservoir back up for use the next day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Studies show that growth hormones in the brain are at lower levels after sleep deprivation. These hormones are necessary for allowing the brain to create new connections during learning and they help maintain the connections already there. Sleep regenerates these in the brain, allowing enhanced performance the following day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Improve Memory&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to sleep effecting how you perform the next day, sleep also effects how well you learned the previous day. Huh? How can a good night of sleep affect what you learned the day before?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sleep is the time that memories are consolidated and strengthened. Even though your kids may get a good night sleep before school, they will retain what they learn in school if they get another good night sleep after school.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Studies show that the brain actually replays activities of the day during sleep and that this replaying strengthens the ability to recall the experience. This applies to academic and physical experiences. Meaning that sleep helps consolidate ‘muscle memory' from motor skills practiced that day as well intellectual memory. Whether it's playing sports, playing a musical instrument, or learning math, the skills are enhanced by sleep.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a related study, researchers took two groups of people, taught them an identical task, and tested them on it three days later. One group was sleep deprived the night after they learned the task and the other group was not. Both groups got adequate sleep for two more nights so that neither was sleep deprived on the day of testing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The group that did not get enough sleep the night after the task, performed much more poorly on the test than the other group the received adequate sleep after learning. This demonstrates again that consolidating experiences the night after learning is just as important as getting adequate sleep before learning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sleep set's your kids up for a successful day by improving their attention and then it drives those experiences home by replaying them again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Improve Grades&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It should be no surprise that the quality of children's grades relate to the quantity of their sleep. Several studies have shown a strong correlation between performance in school and sleep schedule. Kids that get less sleep have worse grades.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In some studies the difference in sleep is not that large between the ‘A and B' student's and the ‘C and below' students. Some studies show that the average difference between these groups of students is only about 30 minutes of total sleep time. This suggests that a little extra sleep goes a long way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An important factor that many parents may not have considered is the bedtime delay between school nights and weekends. Weekend delay is a factor in school performance as well. Students that have greater than a two-hour difference between school night and weekend performance typically have worse grades than students who have a 1-hour delay or less.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The shift in the sleep cycle can throw the circadian rhythm off and effect neurochemicals that control attention and learning. Also, as discussed above, poor sleep on the weekends will impede consolidation of what was learned during the week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Improve Mood&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The interaction between sleep and brain chemistry applies for mood as well. There are complex systems of neruochemicals and hormones that regulate our mood. This has been a hot topic of research science for decades. We have made significant progress on understanding the system but are still really only scratching the surface.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sleep and the circadian rhythm impact have a huge effect on this system and our mood. In some cases, lack of sleep can simply lead to irritability and lack of patience. In other cases it can contribute to more serious mood disorders, like depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Every parent knows that when their kids don't get enough sleep they are cranky. Sometimes when they get too tired, they get down right nasty and unreasonable. We have all dealt with this. Well, there is a lot of neurochemistry going on behind the scenes in these cases. Lack of sleep disrupts brain serotonin levels, which play a major role in sleep and mood.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;How much sleep is enough?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Total sleep is important and we, as parents, should ensure that our kids get to bed early enough to get sufficient sleep. The amount of time needed is variable from age to age and child to child but most parents have a feel for what their kids need. Typically, school age kids need more than 8 hours of sleep to perform optimally. Most kids need 9-10 hours per night.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Again, studies show that kids with greater differences between their school night bed time and weekend bedtime have more daytime sleepiness, greater depressive moods and more sleep cycle problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Befriend the sandman and do what's necessary to get our kids in bed on time. By joining a group, you'll be able to talk with other people who are going through the same emotions and feelings that you are deal with everyday. It has been employed to treat a host of visual anomalies. Since it’s a surgery, people often harbor a false belief that LASIK is a painful procedure. In fact, LASIK is a relatively painless technique, and what the patient experiences during and after the surgery can be categorized as mild discomfort rather than pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LASIK is performed with the patient awake and mobile, and this certainly corroborates that the operation is relatively painless. The surgeon typically administers a mild sedative (for instance Valium) and anesthetic eye drops. LASIK involves creation of a flap of corneal tissue. This hinged flap may be created with a microkeratome (a surgical blade) or a femtosecond laser. During this initial step of flap formation, the patient may experience a little bit of pressure on the eye.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the following step, the flap is folded back to reveal the middle section of the cornea, in order to make way for precise ablation by the excimer laser. Then the flap is repositioned to allow natural healing. Upon completion of the surgery, the patient may experience discomfort, scratchiness and irritation, akin to the sensation of wearing an uncomfortable contact lens. Such irritable sensation can be soothed with the aid of eye drops, and it normally wears off within a few hours after surgery.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since the laser ablation is performed the middle section of the cornea and under the LASIK flap, the cornea does not register the fact that it has been surgically operated. As the wound response is subdued, the patient experiences speedy visual recovery and almost no pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, as with any surgery, LASIK has associated complications that may force the patient to bear greater discomfort after surgery. A few of such nagging complications include dry eyes, visual acuity fluctuation, halos or starbursts around light sources at night, double vision, light sensitivity, and several flap related problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All in all, LASIK is a safe and efficacious procedure, which is virtually painless. Though the patient may experience mild discomfort due to potential complications, the complication rate itself is quite meager. It is estimated that between 1 million people and 4 million people were killed by the virus. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fast forward to October 2004 when an American lab sent out stored samples of the deadly strain of Asian flu to different labs all over the world. By some kind of administrative error some 3,700 samples of the 1957 Asian flu virus were sent out to labs around the world. The US scrambled to fix this terrible error but because the labs had expected to receive a much more normal sample of flu virus for testing they did not treat the sample with the care that the strain they received deserved. It is unlikely that all the samples were retrieved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;How could this have happened?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The College of American Pathologists, from time to time, sends out different viruses to labs worldwide. They do this so that these labs can test to see how well their vaccines are coping with the expected influenza strains. In order to make the testing accurate, the labs are not told what strain of virus they are going to receive. Only the CAP knows what they are sending out to the testing labs. The College of American Pathologists thought that they were sending out a regular old Influenza A virus but instead they sent out one of the most deadly viruses in human history: the Asian flu.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this Asian flu had escaped into the population the consequences would have been very serious. Nobody born since 1968 would have any mmunity to the virus, the effects would likely be at least as bad as they were in 1957 when people had had the chance to buld up some immunity from the virus' ancestors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The incident was caused by an administrative error although the details have yet to be made public. How could 3,700 samples of Asian flu be put out into the world by accident? Samples were sent to Asia, the Middle East, North and South America as well as Europe. It only took one lab worker to have an accident, or for a lab to dispose of the samples incorrectly and the genie would have been out of the bottle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most chilling aspect of the issue was that because of the lack of knowledge at the receiving labs, they did not take the care that they should have. Asian flu should be kept in extreme containment. Because the kits normally contain a relatively harmless strain of flu, they do not receive great security.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This incident tends to put the curent avian (bird) flu scare into perspective. H5N1 (avian) flu does not spread from human to human, only from birds to humans or other animals. As such, whilst it is sensible to be concerned about the bird flu issue, the real threat comes from the kind of man-made mistake of October 2004 when a deadly infectious disease was carelessly handled. This kind of error can happen at any time and would have devatating consequences. Bird flu is unlikely to ever make the jump across species and even now, vaccines are almost ready to protect humans against the H5N1 flu virus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;About the author: Michael Johnson has been writing for quite some time. But what exactly constitutes ‘wellness’? Does wellness mean that we are fine specimens of physical health or does it go beyond the physical? Perhaps it is necessary to consider all facets of our body in order to determine whether we are truly ‘well’.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most people consider themselves to be well if they suffer no symptoms of serious illness or disease. They may be plagued by problems such as insomnia or headaches but nothing life threatening. Therefore they are relatively well. Or are they?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are inundated with advice about how to remain healthy. However, this can lead to an overload of information, leaving people confused and often contributing to a general dissatisfaction with how people see themselves. It becomes easy to find fault with ones self when we get sick. We may blame ourselves for our illnesses because we may have been eating or drinking too much, not exercising, or allowing ourselves to become stressed. After all, if we believe all that is portrayed in the media, we should all be able to achieve perfect health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we consider the achievements made in modern medicine in recent decades, health issues which used to be fatal are often now treatable. Considering these accomplishments, it seems incredible that something as simple as the common cold remains an everyday problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking into alternative treatments, the maze is even more difficult to negotiate. There is such an array of alternative therapies available, it is difficult to know which one is best for our individual needs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The viewpoint of conventional medicine and alternative medicine are completely different. Conventional medicine measures wellness by the absence of symptoms. If you show no physical signs of illness, then you are considered to be well. When illness is present, normally through external factors such as bacteria, the usual treatment is drugs or surgery.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alternative medicine, or holistic medicine, on the other hand, concentrates on the entire body. The person, as considered in holistic medicine, consists of body, mind, emotions, and spirit. The concept of wellness in holistic medicine is the condition that arises when all of these aspects of self are working efficiently and in harmony.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Holistic therapies are as preventative as they are curative. They not only boost our system when needed but can also be used to maintain good health. In conventional medicine, it seems that maintaining our health is seen as having only one set of rules for everyone. However, in holistic medicine, each person is seen as an individual whose needs for health maintenance are something that the person chooses for him or her self. It is simply a case of finding a balanced lifestyle to fit within our own limitations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is common to both strands of medicine, however, that there are three main aspects to the pursuit and maintenance of good health. These are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.    Diet,&lt;br /&gt;2.    Exercise, and&lt;br /&gt;3.    Relaxation&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Diet&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Diet is obviously a very important constituent of wellness. The results of too much alcohol consumption and a failure to follow a nutritious diet are well documented. The incidence of morbid obesity continues to grow and this leads to a variety of other problems related to the general concept of wellness. There may be a number of reasons that people fail to eat a balanced diet. These reasons may be physical, psychological, or even economic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emotional problems may lead to comfort eating or to overeating or undereating. There are also illnesses such as anorexia and bulimia that affect the way a person eats and the resultant lack of wellness that the person experiences.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Exercise&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Exercise is another important component of wellness. It our bodies are not kept in good working order through physical exercise, they deteriorate. A fit body not only leaves you feeling physically well but also improves the psychological and emotional health. Studies in the late 1970s found that exercise can be as successful as therapy in the treatment of depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Holistic therapy considers that there can be a blockage or imbalance in the energy flow and that exercise rebalances that energy, leaving the person feeling calm and revitalized. The exercises that originate in the East, such as tai chi and yoga are specifically designed to work on this energy. This is also the purpose of shiatsu, acupuncture, reflexology and acupressure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Relaxation and stress management&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inability to cope with the problems that face us results in stress. These events can be happy or sad and, according to many in the medical profession, this stress may be responsible for around seventy percent of illnesses. This is due to the fact that tension leads to our immune system becoming weak and leaving us vulnerable to some illnesses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main  way to reduce stress is through relaxation. Everyone relaxes in a different manner, whether it be through listening to music, painting, or going for a walk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Physical relaxation is just as important as mental relaxation and this can be achieved through yoga or even through self hypnosis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Psychotherapy or counseling can help us to identify ways in which to cope more effectively with stressful situations and to give more meaning to our life. Those were cool looks back then. Since finding out how bad smoking is for you and the people around you, it isn't cool anymore.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have you ever watched someone die from lung cancer? I have. It is a horrible way to die. The person who is dying is in pain most of the time and throwing up from the drugs that are suppose to help, but never do. The caretaker wants to help, but there is nothing that can be done to make the person feel better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When it gets bad enough someone has to tend to all of their personal needs 24 hours a day. The person dying feels humiliated and the caretaker suffers from the strain of it all. It is a heart-breaking job to watch someone you love die this way and there is nothing you can do to make it easier for them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When the person dies it doesn't end for the caretaker. There are feelings of quilt for "letting" the person die, thinking they didn't do everything they could, even though nothing could be done to stop it. It takes a lot out of the caretaker and a long time to get over it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The person dying or the caretaker could be your mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, or you. I quit smoking 25 years ago because I wanted to live; you can too. Is your new mattress harder than your old one therefore not as comfortable as you hoped it would be?  Although memory foam mattresses, especially the Tempur Pedic ® brand, are great at providing the help to sleep you are looking for, there are other products available that can make life more comfortable without spending a lot of money.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can lay a memory foam topper on top of your existing mattress to make your bed softer. This is particularly useful if your existing mattress is too firm.  However, if your mattress is too soft for you already, a topper or memory foam pad will only make it softer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problem might be your pillows. If your mattress is okay, but your shoulders and neck ache when you wake up in the morning, it could be that your pillows are not as supportive as you would like them to be.  There are two types of memory foam pillow available. One is a pre-formed shape that is used on its own. The shape is such that it fits into the curve or your neck and supports your head.  It comes with a fitted cover but will also fit into standard pillowcases.  My mother suffers from cervical spondilitis that causes her a lot of pain in the base of her neck and shoulder.  My sister bought her a shaped memory foam pillow and once she got used to it, found it helped her to sleep comfortably. She now sleeps with nothing else.  You only need the one pillow for the correct amount of support.  Pillows are available in the normal pillow shape but they are slightly more expensive because they use more foam and are not likely to be as supportive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Memory foam pillows and toppers are made from the same high density visco-elastic foam that the tops of the mattresses are made from.  Density makes a difference to how soft the foam is - 4lbs per cubic inch is softer than 5lbs (Tempur Pedic ® use 5.34lbs density foam). The toppers come in varying depths but the standard is 2" to 3", the same amount as would be found in full mattress construction, over a harder supportive layer of foam.  Memory foam is too soft to be used on its own in a mattress. The rise in childhood obesity has increased the incidence and prevalence of medical conditions in children, in the past that had been rare.  More frequently, cases of obesity related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension are being treated in children.  These diseases were once thought of as adult conditions. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The two most important things a parent can do to prevent childhood disease is to develop a family lifestyle of healthy eating habits and being physically active.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The exercise goal for children is to teach children the importance of movement.  Don’t allow them to sit for prolonged periods of time in front of the computer, TV, or electronic games.  Have them go outside to play or ride their bike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a child I liked to play with my Barbie dolls.  I could spend hours in my bedroom, very quietly playing.  I remember my mom used to call me and tell me to go outside and play.  It didn’t matter if it was cold or hot outside.  She just wanted me to get fresh air and exercise.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise should be fun and non-competitive for children.  If your child is currently not doing any form of movement, have him/her start off slowly and easily so he/she doesn’t get too tired and frustrated with feeling out-of-shape.  If the child experiences fun and success in exercise activity, it will keep the child going. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scientists have discovered something called a “thrift gene.” People who have this genetic profile are more likely to develop obesity and even worse, Type II diabetes – if they live in an environment that promotes a sedentary lifestyle combined with an overabundance of food.  Genetics may be a factor, but sedentary lifestyle is becoming more prevalent in today’s children. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Move it or lose it.  Studies of the effects of prolonged bed rest or weightlessness in astronauts have taught us that by not carrying our weight around, we lose muscle tissue.  Just as a leg gets thinner when it’s put in a cast, so our muscles get smaller if we aren’t active. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The window of opportunity to learn and integrate new skills is much greater in the brains of children than adults.  Muscles depend on the brain, too.  Waiting until your child is an adult to use muscles is a far greater challenge than putting them to work during their young adolescent years.   Listed below are a few ideas and strategies to get your child active and keep moving.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•   Be creative in finding playful exercises for children both indoors and outdoors.&lt;br /&gt;•   Make fun choices for the family to be active together.&lt;br /&gt;•   When your child first gets home from school, allow him/her to play now and work on homework later.&lt;br /&gt;•   Exercise keeps dieting children healthy.&lt;br /&gt;•   Exercise is healthy for children with stress and depression, it builds their self-confidence.&lt;br /&gt;•   Strength training for kids includes organized sports and playful activities like climbing trees, monkey bars or swings, skipping rope or hop-scotch, gymnastics, dancing, martial arts, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember that exercise and physical activity should be considered a fun activity where the entire family participates. Transmitted by rats, the disease originated from China. It later spread to Europe when merchants came back from their long voyage from China. The disease was also spread by fleas that when passed on to humans, became fatal. The bubonic plague continued for years and took the lives of millions of people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seven centuries later, a new disease is threatening to kill many if precautions are not made. This new disease is avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu. Instead of rodents, birds transmit this disease to humans. Birds carry the bird flu virus in their intestines when they migrate for the winter. The virus, which does not affect the carriers, is deadly to those who come in contact with birds carrying the virus. When chickens, birds or geese come in contact with a bird carrying the virus through the bird’s saliva, nasal secretions or feces, they can become infected, fall ill and die in 48 hours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Humans infected with bird flu have symptoms similar to symptoms of human influenza: fever, sore throat or muscle pain. Because of this similarity, it is easy to mistakenly diagnose an actual bird flu as human influenza. However, humans infected with avian flu would have worse symptoms – eye infections and respiratory problems that could become life threatening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Influenza in pandemic proportions is recorded to have happened three times during the 20th century. The Spanish Flu of 1918, the Asian Flu of 1957 and the Hong Kong Flu of 1968 claimed at least 20 million people worldwide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s important to mention that humans will not usually get bird flu unless they have been in close contact with infected poultry. Since the number of people that has been infected with the disease is still low and confined to a few children and adults, there is no serious cause of alarm yet. However, scientists and the health community are concerned that the disease, which usually affects poultry livestock, may evolve into something that will adversely affect humans. In some scenarios, the bird flu virus may become airborne or transmitted from one human to another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bird flu virus has many subtypes, but the subtype that is proving to be fatal to humans is called the H5N1. To date, about 70 people in Asia are confirmed to have died from H5N1.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a bird flu outbreak occurs, the entire livestock has to be destroyed. This is similar to what happened during the mad cow disease outbreak when cattle had to be slaughtered and burned in order to prevent the disease from spreading to nearby cattle areas. The slaughtering and burning of cattle were done in many countries in the Asian region as well as in some parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Antiviral medications such as amantadine and rimantadine, which are usually given to treat influenza, do not work on the bird flu virus. Drugs are being developed and temporarily used on patients who appear to have succumbed to the avian flu disease. Although they appear to be responding to treatment and are showing improvements, further tests need to be done to ensure the effectivity of these new drugs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Centuries ago, particularly during the bubonic plague, medical science was not yet developed to cope with an epidemic of pandemic proportions. However, with the advances in technology today, scientists will be able to study the avian flu disease further. By closely watching the migratory patterns of birds and understanding the disease, scientists may help prevent bird flu from becoming another global outbreak.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the help of the internet, information can be disseminated quickly to thousands of people around the world and a reaction force can be immediately deployed to stop the disease from spreading any further.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is important for people to realize that the bird flu virus is not merely one country’s problem. Therefore it is also used a smart drug. However DMAE’s effect in relation to skin is not well researched, but its relation is very hyped. DMAE does cause the skin to tighten. On the whole, the effect of DMAE on skin is quite noticeable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Plant Placenta:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Placenta can be found both in animals and plants. In animals, especially mammals, this grows during pregnancy. It is a thick membrane that lines the uterus wall and helps the food exchange from the mother to the growing fetus. And I for one think it is about time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to recent medical research, chocolate has marvelous benefits for the human body. Who in their right mind did not know this? As a subscriber to the Old England Journal of Homemade Cures and Potions, I have known for a very long time that the consumption of chocolate carries with it healthy advantages. For years, this journal carried many delicious articles touting the benefits of chocolate. And I have eaten it all up not to mention several boxes of chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This introduces me to a disturbing thought. I’m grateful for the advancement of modern medicine and science but what I want to know is simply this: if the medical world was mistaken about chocolate, what else are they mistaken about? Could it be that my long-time suspicions about broccoli are right? Has the medical world, which boasted for years about the dietary benefit of broccoli, been wrong all these years?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With recent discoveries, I think this is a real possibility.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have been saying for years that broccoli was bad for you and chocolate was good for you. It seems I have been half right and I suspect another few years will prove I am 100 percent right on both subjects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because I have been right about chocolate, I’m not going to take the chance I’m wrong about broccoli. I propose to eat as much chocolate as possible and avoid broccoli in any and every form.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In light of these recent discoveries concerning chocolate, I thought I would lend my expertise on the subject of how to eat chocolate. Because many people have for so long been under the delusion that chocolate was not healthy, most people do not know how to eat chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I offer myself as an expert on the art of eating chocolate and I have the empty boxes to support my boast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before giving my tips on eating chocolate, let me just say that the chocolate chip cookie is the basic host for chocolate for the novice chocolate eater. Each chocolate chip cookie carries the proper amount of chocolate for the person denied chocolate all these years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, start out with a chocolate chip cookie to make sure you’re on the safe side of this issue. To know the proper amount of cookies, take your weight divided by your height (in inches) and multiplied by your age. This formula never fails.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because chocolate is rather a new food category for most people, let me offer a few tips as you begin the marvelous discovery of the chocolate world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. When you begin eating chocolate, make sure you do it one bite at a time. This is important. Do not succumb to the temptation of taking double or triple bites as you begin. Down the road as you become more adapt at eating chocolate you might grow into this facet of chocolate eating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. If you have a wrapped chocolate bar, remember, it must be unwrapped and allowed to breathe like a fine wine. Many people yield to the temptation of ripping open a candy bar and immediately taking a bite. This is wrong. Chocolate is delicate and must be nurtured carefully in order to enjoy its flavor to its fullest for the longest period of time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. When it comes to chewing chocolate, a person must be very careful. Each bite of chocolate must be chewed no less than 12 times out of respect for the cacao seed that sacrificed itself for your toothsome treat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eating chocolate is a slow, reverent and loving experience. Perhaps the reason so many thought chocolate was not good for a person is that they ate it too fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I once tried chewing a chocolate bar only 11 times and choked. I learned my lesson the hard way and I now wholly respect the delicate nature of chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. One final tip I feel is quite important. Chocolate should always be eaten when you are alone for a very important reason. When a person is eating chocolate, his full concentration should be on the process of eating and enjoying the rich chocolaty flavor. Any distractions, even the presence of a loved one, diverts from the whole experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you stop to think about this whole chocolate business, it is almost like a religious experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As religious experiences go, the only genuine experience centers on knowing God, as he desires to be known. When it comes to religion, most people rush through without giving it much thought. And of course, they really never get to experience the full benefit of their religious experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;David understood this concept when he wrote, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalms 46:10 KJV.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this rat race of a world, it is almost impossible to find the time or the place to get still enough to really experience the presence of God. We have time for everything but this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps God gets a bad rap from people for the same reason chocolate for many years was given a bad rap. To really know chocolate is to love chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I honestly believe the same can be said for God. For the person who takes the time to get to know God he begins to understand God and consequently loves God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;James L. While numerous doctors maintain we get all that we require from the foods we eat, others prefer to offer supplementary vitamins when their patients are&lt;br /&gt;under stress such as pregnancy, illness or even aging.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Studies have shown that taking supplementary B group vitamins, specifically folic acid and B12 have reduced birth defects from 72 to 100%. Since regulations authorizing the addition of folic acid to grains have come into&lt;br /&gt;play, the incidence of birth defects in the United States has lessened by 19%, though skeptics claim there could be alternate reasons.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"&gt;- Symptoms of folate deficiency.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your tongue is swollen and you suffer from loss of appetite, shortness of breath, are irritable, forgetful and mentally sluggish, you may have a folate deficiency. Folic acid is one of the B group of vitamins. Most animal and plant foods are poor sources of it. The exception is liver which most folks do not eat a lot of these days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Various habits and diseases also play a greater share in causing a lack of this vitamin. Celiac disease, alcoholism and irritable bowel syndrome just to name a few. Studies have also suggested that when ageing individuals suffer&lt;br /&gt;from depression it is caused by a lack of folate vitamin (B9).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Folate should be taken with B6 And B12 vitamins to help its absorption and function in the body. These three vitamins work together to help relieve symptoms of depression. They do this by lowering the amount of homocysteine, which is thought to play an active roll in causing depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Several population-based studies around the United States have shown that various cancers are less ubiquitous in people who have high levels of folic acid. These people consumed high amounts of beta-carotene, vitamin C and&lt;br /&gt;fiber. One study of 50,000 women revealed that adequate consumption of folate significantly reduced the chances of breast cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some prescription medications for inflammatory bowel disease have been found to interfere with the bodies proficiency to absorb folate . This deficiency has as well been linked to male infertility and heart disease. Foods that offer&lt;br /&gt;the most folic acid are dark leafy greens, brewers yeast, beef liver, various seafood, orange juice and milk. Root vegetables and whole grains also provide diminutive amounts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Side effects from folic acid supplements are uncommon, though they can occur if the dose exceeds 15000 mcg per day. Talking to the person concerned often eases out many of the underlying causes of anxiety. Behavior and cognitive therapies are other common therapies for curing anxiety. Behavior therapy sees to it that unwanted behavior are got rid of and the individual is rendered more capable of facing difficult situations in life. Cognitive therapy concerns changing unproductive or harmful thought patterns.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Medications for relieving anxiety, stress and tension are also suggested. And recent scientific research has suggested they are also potentially effective in both preventing and treating prostate cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One study, conducted on human prostate cancer cells in lab dishes, at the University of Wisconsin, found that there were dose dependant improvements. Another study at the same facility injected mice with human prostate cancer cells. These mice developed malignancies. Some mice were fed plain water, whilst two other groups of mice were given water mixed with different concentrations of pomegranate extract.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those mice that had water only had tumors that grew much faster than the pomegranate and water groups. The quantities given to the mice were comparable to that which people might get if they drank pomegranate juice on a daily basis. And whilst pomegranate juice hasn't been tested on humans with prostate cancer yet, the results are very good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The study did not indicate what aspects of pomegranate juice were responsible for slowing down prostate tumour growth. But the scientists involved did mention the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds, which are more effective than green tea and red wine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pomegranate extract not only inhibited the growth of cancer cells, it also worked by another means - apoptosis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Apoptosis refers to a way that cells can die. Cancer growths are characterized by an uncontrolled growth of cells that do not follow the normal processes of cellular differentiation of regular, healthy cells. Cellular differentiation means that the characteristics of a cell change and get the functions that a mature, healthy cell would. For example, liver cells have specialized liver functions, as do prostate, breast, kidney, and all other types of cells. This is normal and healthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In tumour growths, although some cells fully differentiate, many only differentiate partially, and some not at all. And the tumors which have more undifferentiated cells grow faster. So, inducing cellular differentiation is one approach to cancer treatment. The other two ways that doctors and researchers try to treat cancer is by causing the death of cancerous cells. They do this through apoptosis, mentioned above, and necrosis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In apoptosis, cell death is programmed into the cell when it is 'born'. So the cell dies in a more natural way that is less destructive on its environment. By this I mean it doesn't cause inflammation and the damage associated with it to neighboring cells that may be healthy. Cells die either when they reach cellular old age or when their death benefits the body as a whole. Necrosis, on the other hand, does cause inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Generally, prostate cancer grows very slowly, although it is unpredictable and can grow quickly and spread.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;References:&lt;br /&gt;1. That is how some people describe the benefits of therapy lights.  Scientists believe that simulated bright light has an effect on chemicals in your brain and your skin and can be used to help some conditions.  There are many different types of therapy lights so I'm going to described some of them and the disorders they can be used with:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Light boxes (Phototherapy or bright light therapy)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many therapists have noticed that sitting near a simulated sunlight box can alleviate symptoms for some complaints. The strength of the light should be at least 2,500lux and daily exposure is required. Remember that a medical practitioner must prescribe the strength and type of light used as well as the duration of exposure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;SAD Lights&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or its mildest form 'Winter Blues'.  You don't have to be a genius to know that we all feel better during the long sunny days of summer. We seem to have more energy too. You lose some of that enthusiasm in the winter when there are not so many daylight hours. Some people get 'winter blues' which makes them feel lethargic and 'under the weather', with a tendency to overeat. For others this becomes severe enough it to disrupt their lives and cause a lot of upset.   It can also affect the way we behave.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The symptoms usually start at the beginning of the winter season and begin to get better when spring arrives in March and April.  It may not be necessary to use light SAD therapy daily during the winter months and advice from a trained professional is advised.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Jetlag and Sleep Disorders&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Where the circadian rhythms or body clock of the brain have been affected by periods of sleep deprivation or extended night or daytime hours. Flying over time zones can have this effect. The light box can simulate the difference between waking hours and sleep or night time and helps to re-adjust the body and brain into rhythm quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Alzheimer's and Dementia&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A regular topic in many research papers on Alzheimer's Disease is the damage that happens to the part of the brain that controls the circadian rhythms.  The combination of damaged nerve pathways and poor eyesight as you get older can mean that indoor levels of light are not enough to identify the difference between daytime and night time.  Experiments using therapy lights and light boxes have found that they can help maintain Alzheimer sufferers' rest and activity cycles for longer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;UVB/UVA1 light&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same technology that is used for sunbeds in tanning shops can also help to ease stubborn patches of psoriasis, vitiligo, stretch marks and pale scars. The light must be focussed on the affected patch without unwanted exposure to normal skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Coloured-light therapy or Intense Pulsed Light&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These types of therapy lights use filtered floodlights to bathe the skin in light of different colors.  Different color filters have proven better for different disorders:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blue:  is used to destroy the bacteria that cause acne.&lt;br /&gt;Green:  is used to treat pigment irregularities e.g. liver spots, age spots&lt;br /&gt;Yellow:  for vascular conditions such as thread veins and rosacea.&lt;br /&gt;Combination green and yellow:  smoothes away fine lines and wrinkles.&lt;br /&gt;Red: has been found to be effective in the relief of headaches and, when concentrated in one area, for the relief of arthritic pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Low-level laser light (Ruby and KTP) therapy&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Developed to help reduce patches of discoloured skin, such as birthmarks or moles. Laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the skin causing it to break up in darker areas and help to make it look more normal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The above two systems of therapy lights can be combined and used to remove areas where the person believes they have too much hair.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Information in this article is for advice only. Some dermatologists consider it to be the most severe kind because topical medications do not get to the root of the problem. It heals extremely slowly because it is so deep that the infection is trapped under the skin. Cystic acne treatment is usually limited to oral medication so all cases should be taken to a dermatologist.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Isotretinoin is the most common, and most potent drug prescribed for cystic acne treatment. It is a man-made form of retinoid (Vitamin A) that is taken in pill form. It is the only prescription that treats excess oil production, clogged skin pores, and inflammation. This pill is taken up to 20 weeks and commonly does not require more than one course of therapy to cure. The most serious side-effect to taking this medication is the possibility of birth defects to a developing fetus. For this reason, women are required to not be pregnant or get pregnant at any time during this treatment. Regular check-ups are scheduled for each patient using this medication to monitor any additional side effects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common side effects of using isotretinoin as a cystic acne treatment include: muscle aches, uncomfortable drying of the lips and eyes, depression, and chest pain. Some of these side effects can cause serious health problems in the future. Always contact your doctor if you notice any of these side effects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oral contraceptives are used as cystic acne treatment in females.  It suppresses overactive sebaceous (oil producing) glands, and is safe to be used long-term. In addition to an oral contraceptive, the doctor may prescribe a synthetic steroid to inhibit other hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If oral cystic acne treatment does not work, they may require drainage. This is considered acne surgery and should only be performed by a professional, in a sterile environment. If you attempt to squeeze or pick them yourself, the infection may last much longer than it would have. You may cause the infection to worsen and increase the inflammation and swelling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For dramatically inflamed cysts, a dermatologist may decide to administer an injection with a highly-diluted corticosteroid to bring down the inflammation and increase the speed of healing. It is a generally painless procedure. It usually clears the cyst within a week and prevents rupturing and scarring. However, this is not the first choice of cystic acne treatment by most dermatologist because it only treats current acne.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to the medications your dermatologist prescribes to you, be responsible for the health of your skin. Wash your face at least once a day, especially following exercise or other sweat-inducing activity. Do not wash your skin too often or it could result in drying out. Bursting of cystic acne will most likely result in scars, so avoid this at all costs. Make sure your hands and fingers stay away from your face.
